Award-winning tooth brushing innovation Brushlink has been selected by the Chief Dental Officer to support the Office of the Chief Dental Officer’s SMILE4LIFE campaign.

Smile4life is the title of a national framework for oral health initiatives.

With an initial focus on early years, the initiative gains commitment from a range of health professional and establishes partnerships – including initiatives to facilitate referrals to dentists for dental checks by age one – from a range of sectors including A&E, schools, health visitors, parent teacher associations and GPs, as well as promoting self-care.

The Brushlink device is a tiny hi-tech Bluetooth unit that attaches easily to any toothbrush and monitors brushing frequency, duration and – for the first time – angulation so that correct brushing angles can be encouraged, reinforced and monitored to help prevent gum disease. It effectively turns any toothbrush into a smart brush at around a tenth of the price of smart brushes currently on the market.

The accompanying free mobile phone app provides the user with real time brushing guidance and performance monitoring. Each brushing session is scored and monitored and the cumulative data can be shared with dental professionals in order to target help and advice. Data can be stored for up to three months, so there is no need for patients to have their phones with them every time they brush.

It is great for families, because it introduces a fun and competitive element to the twice-daily routine of tooth brushing. Early interim results from clinical research indicate that Brushlink can prevent the build-up of dental plaque by as much as 40 per cent.

The Brushlink team is currently working with the UK’s largest independent provider of care to pilot the use of Brushlink in its residential care homes, and it is also a key

partner in the British Society for Dental Hygiene and Therapy’s First Smiles campaign due to launch in June.
